I was recently directed to an article on the Greenpress blog that concerns the direction of flat-screen television technology within the electronics industry. As you might imagine, given current consumer demand, companies like Japan’s Samsung have been scrambling to find ways to save energy and lower the overall carbon footprint of their range of offerings.
With the flat-screen TV wave still riding high, and new products becoming ever more affordable, the market for greener TVs is just about wide open. Samsung’s main draw to their new model is that it will be “eco-friendly and…save you 40% more on your energy bill. The LED televisions are also slimmer and require less packaging and shipping costs and also do not use harmful chemicals such as mercury.”
Not to be outdone, LG will soon be releasing a 15 inch model with similar green features and backlit LED technology. However, LG’s version will have the ability to integrate the web, allowing consumers to stream from digital video content sites like Vudu.
This could mark the beginning of a new wave in design for flat-screen style televisions. Both the ability to handle web content and offer energy-savings will undoubtedly become two leading trends of the new era. While the current prices are several notches above affordable, “the innovations in green televisions and displays will be more economical over time as well as greener,” says Greenpress.
