Kudos to Phoenix, Arizona, for becoming the US’ second city with an all-hybrid fleet of taxis. The company Clean-Air Cab boasts slightly lower rates than conventional taxi companies according to a press release, and will join Washington D.C. based Envirocab in offering a greener alternative to the traditional Ford Crown Victoria taxi. Furthermore, “In addition to using hybrid vehicles, Clean Air Cab purchases carbon offsets to negate its emissions, calling itself carbon neutral. As of now the company has 26 cabs, with plans to eventually grow to a fleet of more than 200,” according to environmentalleader.com .
Given that states are able to help fund these endeavors with subsidies or tax breaks, I think this will be a trend all over the United States. Hopefully increasing the amount of hybrid vehicles purchased for public use will have put some downward pressure on the prices of hybrids in the marketplace, making it easier to put more hybrids on the road.
