New York Drops Energy Use Initiative

After fierce opposition from building owners, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has dropped an important initiative of his plan for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The plan originally called for all buildings of 50,000 square feet or more to be audited in order to determine which renovations would make them most energy efficient, and for owners [...]

In the latest development in what appears to be a rush by international airlines to demonstrate the use ofalternative fuels, Dutch airline KLM has announced what it is calling the world’s first passenger flight powered by biofuel. The flight was not a regularly scheduled commercial flight, but a demonstration by the airliner of the ability [...]

Solar-Powered Cell Phones to Connect the Developing World

I’ve written in the past months about solar power’s prospects outside of large-scale solar farms and residential paneling, mostly as it would apply to gadgetry and daily use items. But it’s clear now that cell phones, as I’ve mentioned before, are a new frontier for the budding solar market, especially as they apply to the [...]

Turning Wastewater into Ethanol

I read a brief article in the dailygreen today regarding the prospect of converting municipal waste water into power which is both exciting and relatively hard to read. An Israeli based company, Applied Clean Tech, has partnered with Massachusetts based firm Qteros in an effort to make cellulosic ethanol. The process is two fold: ACT [...]

Swedish Scientist Makes Battery Breakthrough

It seems that just about every week nowadays there is an announcement about some breakthrough in battery technology. Whether that breakthrough applies to the battery technology within the next big hybrid/electric vehicle, or just improved efficiency for the industry staple lithium battery, it’s getting hard to keep up with the headlines.
Today’s news comes by way [...]

YouTube – Massive Views, Minimal Revenues

In April, Credit Suisse analyst Spencer Wang estimated that YouTube would cost Google $470 million in 2009. The video streaming site would bring in $240 million, he reported, but cost $710 million to upkeep ($360 million of which is bandwidth costs). The site was, and is a “cash sinkhole,” Wang now famously proclaimed.
Today, Google has [...]

And the TechCrunch 09′ Winner is…

The TechCrunch conference recently took place and its worthwhile event that I try to follow every year. It seems the big trend to emerge this year is around sites that provide consumer ratings and services. In essence, these sites are looking to merge phone book style listings with greater utility.
To that end, start-up Redbeacon.com took the top [...]

Envion to Create Fuel Through Recycling Plastic

In more exciting news on the front of green innovation, the New York Times reports on Envion, a company that has developed a $5 million plant in Maryland that can convert low-value recycled plastic, like the type used in planters and margarine containers, into a low-grade fuel.
Envion’s chief executive, Michael Han, says the fuel could be used in [...]

Zune HD is Impressive, But Lack of App Store is Not

Just when Microsoft seemed poised to recapture some of Apple’s market dominance with the release of its Zune HD – a worthy opponent to the iPod (mp3 player of choice and current industry leader) – I read press stating that the device won’t be an open platform for third party app developers. Instead, Microsoft has [...]
