HAART and Harvest

The creation of the HAART & Harvest Initiative, a program designed to provide regular access to food. A ten acre farm was established near Kenya’s Mosoriot Clinic in an effort to produce food locally.

When people think about AIDS, expensive retrovirals come to mind. Preventative measures like contraception and abstinence get floated around. And lofty unrealistic dreams of a vaccine are conceived. What most don’t realize is that what many AIDS victims need most is food.

HAART & Harvest delivers food to those that need it most in western Kenya, where the stigma of AIDS in huge, and food security is a constant question. The initiative, the cornerstone of AMPATH’s program to combat HIV in Kenya, encourages sustainable and high-yield farming and counsels infected individuals on how to best manage their health.

HAART & Harvest doesn’t just feed the needy. It teaches them how to feed themselves and gives them the tools to become productive members of society. Productive victims of AIDS help reduce the stigma attached to the disease.

I’m proud to support the cause and look forward to participating in its continued success.
