This important and effective educational program was developed by Mayor Jerry Brown to help underprivileged children of the Oakland area succeed in the arts.
Creative expression is what makes us human. It’s what connects us with ourselves and with our world. And it’s an essential part of a healthy human’s upbringing. That’s why I support the Oakland School for the Arts, a charter school in Norther California founded in 2000.
Offering seven main courses of study (Arts Management, Dance, Instrumental Dance, Instrumental Music, Literary Arts, Theatre, Vocal Music, Visual Arts), the OSA throws students into an ultra intense learning environment and gives them the tools to succeed in life after school.
Music education doesn’t just teach music. Drawing classes don’t just show a student how to draw. The arts provide young adults with values such as hard work, self-awareness and patience. I can’t think of a better way to more positively affect the growth of a young man or woman. That’s why you’ll count me as a supporter of this fine institution for a long time to come.
